Daniyal Mueenuddin

These stories are linked by the life of a rich Pakistani landowner whose large family employ an army of peasants to work their households and estates. This is a world where the rich hold on tightly to their wealth, but for most life is tough - poverty and death lurk perilously close. Don't be put off by the underlying grimness. These are fascinating, compelling and richly textured stories full of intriguing characters – a book to savour.

That night as usual we went to sleep on the terrace in front of the house. In the middle of the night I woke and there was my wife sitting on the ground next to me. Beside her the empty bottle of kerosene, and in her hand the match that set her on fire. A painful sight ,Your Honor, just burning like fireworks. She had committed suicide. I ran to get help from the neighbors.
