This traditional saga kept my attention, not through the conventional characters and unsurprising plot developments, but by its location - a charming stately home in Yorkshire. The events (evacuees, the Blitz, the frontline) are reminiscent of many domestic war stories and despite it verging on the melodramatic, it was the lovely descriptions of the grand hall and picturesque surroundings with their acute link to history which kept me reading.
