The Road to Urbino

Roma Tearne

The story intrigued me from the start. I found the differing viewpoints really interesting and my sympathies with the various characters grew as I learnt more of their stories. But I was totally unprepared for the shocking event which made this novel truly haunting.

Extract
Normally I would wait behind bullet-proof glass for my visitor. But you are no normal visitor. Glancing side-ways at you, I see a thin, tall woman in a trouser suit .... We have shaken hands briefly, a formality that does nothing to reassure me. My hands tremble. As I watch, you pick a small thread from the sleeve of your jacket. It is red like your bag. Red like the colour in the painting.
