When Captain Flint Was Still a Good Man by Nick Dybek

When Captain Flint Was Still a Good Man

Nick Dybek

When the livelihood of an entire fishing village is threatened, 14 year old Cal inadvertently becomes involved in a bizarre and dangerous plot, devised by his father and the other fishermen, to save the fleet. His actions change his relationship with his parents and his community forever. A brilliantly atmospheric 'coming of age' novel in which the environment and the remoteness of Loyalty Island have major roles. Greatly enjoyed.

My mother waited for me to speak - to tell her I thought the song was a signal, her way of acknowledging what had occurred in our town and our home, to tell her things I couldn't have said at fourteen and can barely say now at twenty-eight. It was the closest I ever came to admitting my part in what happened. I've felt the silence ever since like an ache in my jaw.
