This ambitious fusion of fantasy, folklore, love and war in 20th century Russia may prove a bit tricky for those unfamiliar with the folktales on which it is based. Although beautifully written in parts, I enjoyed the beginning but by the end had lost the plot and found the end something of a disappointment. However, I know other readers found the conclusion very powerful. Will appeal to those drawn to Russian fairytales and magical fiction.
