Co-wives, co-widows

Adrienne Yabouza

Two African women, Ndongo Passy and Grekpoubou, married to the same man, Lidou, have to confront his family when he dies unexpectedly, in order to secure the future of their children. The title is the spoiler as it tells you the fulcrum of the plot. They are co-wives and then co-widows. The story is about how they survive the crisis, and as the reader you will be rooting for them - and really want them to pull through.

She went to find Grekpoubou, to make sure she was claiming everything that was hers.

'Sister, don't forget your Singer!'

She grabbed the sewing machine herself and put it into a blue bag that had once held fifty kilos of Thai rice.  She moved towards Lidou's office, axe in hand. Some people might have called her crazy at that moment, a witch, others might have called her a warrior. Either way, if Zouaboua had presented himself right then, she would've chopped his limbs into a thousand pieces and cooked them. That night, Ndongo Passy was no longer a saint or a mother: she was a ferocious beast.
