The Whale Tattoo by Jon Ransom

The Whale Tattoo

Jon Ransom

Much like the sea in the book, the language ebbs and flows, so whilst there is much that may offend such as strong swearing, explicit sex and bodily fluids, at the same time there’s a lyricism to the story. Both gritty and gripping, it is all about trauma and family, revenge and forgiveness. In some moments I was drowning in plot, unsure of what was happening, or had happened, but I slowly untangled the truth, carried away through to the end.

‘Guess what?’ he says.  His expression unfamiliar.

‘What?’

‘I’m - getting married.’

‘Huh?’

‘It’s true.’

I make to move but Fysh keeps me here with the urgency in his eyes.  Sometimes being with him is like trying to push back the river with my palms.  There’s too much to hold on to. He pours through me and I’m soaked with him.
