Bridge

Lauren Beukes

A breathtaking novel set in parallel universes. Jo is a traveller between these worlds, alongside her daughter, Bridget. They use a dreamworm for their journey - a parasite, capable of spreading infection through the multiverse. Over time, Jo recruits others to use the dreamworm, but then people get sick, people die and Jo goes missing. This leaves Bridget (older and now Bridge) and her partner Dom, with the task of finding Jo. Truly gripping.

Bridge looks down at the wheel to see which lever is the turn signal ....  See, she's already learning how to drive someone else's life. She hopes Religet is okay.  At least Dom is going to be honest with her. They should try to time things, work out a custody schedule that's more equitable and consensual. This is when I'm taking your life and you can have mine. Future goals.

She guides the car across the freeway, one lane at a time, heart racing. I feel you, Bridge thinks as a truck blares past her. There's an off-ramp coming up ahead, and she takes the turn and drives until she spots a big-box store called Target and  pulls over into the parking lot next to an SUV covered in stickers for a political candidate she doesn't recognize. She's given herself longer for this jump. A whole hour to do what she needs to do.
