She turned back into the bedroom. On the floor under the table lay a white paper bag from the shop up the road, unmistakably marked with the muddy imprint of a boot. Maria shivered and sat down on the bed. Her alarm clock ticked in the silence, the fridge whirred faintly in the kitchen. Water gurgled in the guttering and the wind rustled in the trees. Maria lay down on the bed fully clothed and closed her eyes. 'He's been here,' she whispered to herself, with infinite pleasure.
