I’m not sure 3 guys would be allowed to look after a 2-year old like this but forget the realism and enjoy the acute perceptions of relationships – friendships, fathers and sons – which are totally believable. There’s so much empathy here, and for such different stages of life, it becomes a deeply emotional read.

He had worked out the most reliable skidding zones, his best den, his second-choice den, and several fall-back dens after that. He spent a lot of time under the sink, rearranging the cloths and the boxes of powder. Then he returned for a second stint by the door, peeling up the welcome mat and calling it disgusting. Triangulating clues - Teo marvelled - Joel was able to figure out where to drag a kitchen chair, better to clamber up on the counter and reach the cupboard that held the biscuits.
