The Intuitionist by Colson Whitehead

The Intuitionist

Colson Whitehead

I found it very easy to share Lila Mae's delight in becoming an 'intuitionist' lift safety inspector. And then to share her fear and sense of unreality as she finds no-one to trust after 'the accident'. I found it much more difficult to credit that her entirely believable character was developed by a male author - which I didn't realise until I read the blurb at the end.

Extract
Lila May has one friend in the Department and his name is Chuck. Chuck's red hair is chopped and combed into a prim safety, which helps him fit in with the younger inspectors in the Department.
