A very moving read about love and jealousy on the Hebridean island of Lewis during the Great War as families await the return of soldiers from France. Based on a true historical event, I found this to be a very emotionally charged novel.

She struggles to forget the fine brown eyes, the thick dark hair, the beautiful and tender hands, so true upon the fiddle strings. She tries not to hear his tune for her, but "Mairi's Waltz" rises up to haunt her, that and "The Dark Ship." Calum's drifting melodies seem somehow to define her past, her future.

She cannot explain what happened. There is no sense in it.
