This big book starts slowly and for the first 50 pages the gloomy, alcoholic hero really did my head in. But then the plot started to grip until I had to stay up to 2am to finish what had become an addictive read. Beware - this book has more red herrings than Agatha Christie at her most complicated, plus the ability to introduce characters who just don't behave as might be expected.
