Wild Dogs

Helen Humphreys

A very moving and unsettling story and really beautifully written. Is there a shred of hope at the end? You certainly won't forget this in a hurry.

But they don't return to us. We come out to the woods every evening and call to the dogs, and they never come back. And it is not about love, although we love the dogs fiercely. But the dogs didn't undestand our love when they lived with us and certainly they don't understand it now. No, it is not about love. It is about belonging. Once we belonged with those dogs, belonged to them, and now that they've left us we don't know who we are.
