Disquiet

Julia Leigh

What a strange little book. A shocking story told so calmly and objectively and yet it's so beautifully inevitable - rather like a nightmare from which you cannot wake. I was totally enthralled by this brief and at times ghoulish story.

Extract
She did not run along the hallway. She walked as if she had already walked a thousand miles and the hallway were the beginning of a further thousand miles before her.... She picked up the receiver and brought it to her ear. She listened for a few minutes, he features softening, losing form, and then - without speaking - she placed the receiver on the bureau, left it off the hook.
