A Girl Could Stand Up

Leslie Marshall

Six year old Elray loses both her parents in a freak accident in the Tunnel of Love, and goes to live with her two uncles, Ajax and Harwood. They become a slightly dysfunctional family, Ajax is a cross-dresser and prefers to be called 'Aunt'. A book which made me laugh out loud and then reach for a tissue! Something a little bit different and an entertaining read.

It was to commemorate the confluence of all these events - the return of my voice, the belated celebration of my sixth birthday, the end of my life with Barkley and Jack and the beginning of my time with Ajax and Harwood - that Crawlspace Day evolved into a yearly tradition in our house. It was to commemorate the Big Scream - the explosive creation of our new universe - that we gathered. Although originally the holiday had the trappings primarily of a second, bonus birthday party for me, it quickly became as much a celebration of my parents and an investigation into the people they had been. Ajax, Harwood and I would sit in the mote-filled light under the porch, eat and drink, open presents and tell every story we could think about Barkley and Jack.
